Diplomas in employment law granted

Twenty-five students received diplomas in Employment Law from UCD in Newman House this month.

The Professional Diploma in Employment Law, directed by Anthony Kerr, is a part-time course run over one academic year, aimed at people working in human resources, trade unions and industrial relations as well as lawyers. Among those who graduated were Vivian Jackson and Bernadette Treanor, Equality Officers with the Equality Tribunal.

NUIG Centre for Disability

The Centre on Disability Law & Policy at NUI Galway, directed by Prof Gerard Quinn, will publish a major book on EU disability law (with the Catholic University of Louvain) later this year. It will also publish an annual European Yearbook on Disability Law & Policy(with Maastricht University).

The Galway Centre co-directs a major project for the European Commission mapping the UN disability convention onto EU law. More information on www.nuigalway.ie/cdlp

Roundtable on Christian values

Dr Kenneth Milne, historiographer of the Church of Ireland (CoI), and Very Rev Canon Prof Adrian Empey (CoI), will contribute to a roundtable discussion on Christian values and Irish membership of the EU on Tuesday, July 28th, at 12.45pm at the Institute of International and European Affairs, North Great Georges St, Dublin 1.

This follows a roundtable conference at the IIEA on the theme of EU law and Christian values in November 2008, and a discussion with Archbishop Diarmuid Martin in March 2009.

Second edition of book on genocide

The second edition of Prof Bill Schabas’s book on genocide was launched recently by Prof John Scheffer, who was the first US Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues, during US president Bill Clintons second term in office.

Genocide in International Law: The Crime of Crimes, 2nd edition(Cambridge University Press, 2009) consists of a major revision of the first edition. The second edition reviews case law on genocide since 2000, the substantial academic contributions and the political developments.
