The High Court has appointed an interim examiner to a chain of Dublin city centre-based convenience stores employing 29 full- and part-time staff.

Ms Justice Mary Finlay Geoghegan appointed Neil Hughes of Hughes Blake chartered Accountants as interim examiner to Chef's Cafe's Ltd, of Upper Liffey Street Dublin 1.

The company petitioned the court as a result of difficulties with a primary supplier and sub tenants caused by the economic down turn, the court heard. The main creditors include the Revenue Commissioners, Bank of Ireland and suppliers including ADM Londis.

Three of the stores operated by the firm trade under the brand "Gala Express", while one operates under the Mace brand. The fifth store operates under the business name "The City Gem". The stores are located in the Ilac Shopping Centre, Lower Abbey Street and O'Connell Street.
