The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission is investigating after a man died in hospital shortly after his arrest yesterday.

He was arrested by gardaí in Maynooth, Co Kildare, yesterday afternoon and taken to Leixlip Garda station.

In a statement, the commission said gardaí had informed it that the man was intoxicated when arrested.

Upon arrival at the station, an ambulance was called and the man was conveyed to Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown. He was pronounced dead later in the afternoon, the commission said.

“The investigation was referred to the Garda Ombudsman in accordance with Section 102 of the Act, for investigation, is at an early stage.”

It said the identity of the deceased could not be released until all family members had been informed.
