Accountant to meet with charity members over funds totalling €161,000

The treasurer and accountant of a state-funded charity providing education and support for teenagers is to meet with other members of the charity over allegations he misappropriated up to €161,000 of its funds, the High Court has heard.

On Wednesday, Eamon Marry BL, for Carline Learning Centre, said investigations so far revealed money of the order of €161,000 from Carline's accounts appeared to have been diverted or misappropriated by Greg Walsh – of Walsh and Co Accountants, Walkinstown, Dublin.

Mr Justice Paul Gilligan granted permission to Carline to serve proceedings at short notice on Mr Walsh and returned the case to Thursday.

However, Mr Marry said a number of undertakings had been given by the defendant and matters had “moved on”.

Mr Walsh had agreed to meet with Carline representatives to address a number of matters and the case could be adjourned for seven days on the basis of undertakings given.

Ben O’Floinn BL, for the Revenue Commissioners, said his client would supply the court with information in relation to tax liabilities which had been at the centre of the allegations in the case.

Mr Justice Gilligan put the case back for a week.

Carline had sought a number of injunctions including preventing Mr Walsh from dissipating or disposing of his assets below €250,000.

Mr Walsh has been a director of Carline since 2004 as well as being its treasurer and accountant.

Concerns were raised about his activities as a result of an outstanding liability of €72,500 to Revenue.

A number of cheques for substantial sums appeared to have been made out to Mr Walsh himself, his firm, his father and two other third parties with no association with Carline, it is alleged.
