Man (31) charged with murder of Jimmy Loughlin in Sligo

Judge agrees to request that accused undergo an urgent psychiatric evaluation

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 20-year-old in Sligo town over the weekend.

Richard McLoughlin (31), of City Gate Apartments, Connolly Street, Sligo was charged with the murder of Jimmy Loughlin at Connolly Street on February 24th.

Garda Thomas James Gallagher gave evidence at a sitting of Donegal District Court on Monday of arresting Mr McLoughlin at O’Connell Street in Ballymote on Sunday.

He was later charged at Ballymote Garda station and made no reply to the charge, the court heard.

Keith O’Grady, solicitor for Mr McLoughlin, asked for an urgent psychiatric evaluation to be carried out on his client, who he said was on medication. There was no objection from the State.

Judge Kevin Kilrane directed that Mr McLoughlin receive psychiatric treatment while in custody and also granted him legal aid. He remanded the accused in custody to Friday’s district court sitting in Harristown.
