The amount of savings in Irish Credit Unions has surpassed the €8 billion mark for the first time, the organisation reported today.

More than 2.5 million people are members of the 534 credit unions in Ireland on both sides of the border.

More than €5 billion of the Credit Union's reserves are out on loan and the average loan is just over €6,000.

The details were released in advance of the organisation's biennial delegate in Waterford this weekend.

At the two-day meeting 1,500 delegates will vote on a series of proposals contained in the Review Commission report published last year. A progress report on the reform process will also be published.
