Atheltics: Ireland's hopes of a second medal at the European Championships in Gothenburg were dashed this afternoon when Alistair Cragg pulled up in pain while leading the final of the 5,000 metres.

Cragg grimaced suddenly as he took the lead with four leaps to go and injected significant pace into a race that up to then had been run at training pace.

Yards later Cragg dropped to the ground on the in-field clasping his leg.

It was a Spanish double in the end as Jesus Espana won the race in a time of 13:44.70 while Juan Carlos Higuero finished third. Mohamed Farah of Britain took silver.

Later there was more disappointment as the Irish 4 x 400m relay team failed to capitalise on yesterday's fourth place in the semi final and came home last of the nine teams.

The team of Paul McKee, Brian Doyle, David Gillick and David McCarthy posted a time of 3:05.57.

The race was won by France in a time of 3:01.10, with Britain (3:01.63) second and Poland (3:01.73) third.
