Charges of assault against a Cork football and hurling star were dismissed yesterday after the man claiming he was injured failed to show up in court.

Former sports star Mr Teddy McCarthy (38), Woodbrook, Glanmire, was before Cork District Court last month on charges of assault and threatening behaviour.

The dual All-Ireland medal holder was charged with assaulting Mr Derek Duffy and engaging in abusive behaviour at the Crestfield centre in the early hours of New Year's Day last.

Mr McCarthy made history in 1990 when he became the first player in over 100 years to win All-Ireland senior hurling and football medals in the same year.

Last month the court heard that Mr McCarthy would be pleading not guilty to the charges. The case had been adjourned until yesterday because Mr Duffy was out of the jurisdiction. However, he failed to show up at yesterday's hearing.
