Counting continues in Seanad elections

Senator Mary Henry has been re-elected to the Seanad on the 10th count for the Dublin University panel

Senator Mary Henry has been re-elected to the Seanad on the 10th count for the Dublin University panel. Senator Henry polled 3,259 votes, 879 ahead of nearest rival Ms Ivana Bacik.

Also on the Dublin University panel, outgoing independent Senators David Norris and Shane Ross were re-elected last night on the fifth count with just 116 votes separating them.

The three National University of Ireland seats have also been filled with Senators Fergal Quinn, Brendan Ryan and Joe O'Toole returning to the upper house.

The three outgoing senators, faced stern competition from Ms Bernadine O'Sullivan and first-time candidate Ms Valerie Bresnihan.

Two full panels now remain to be filled. The counting of votes for the Industrial and Commercial panel got underway this morning with nine seats being contested. The result of the vote is expected to come in after midnight tonight.

Counting of votes on the Administration Panel will begin tomorrow morning.
