DUBLIN Corporation has been accused by residents' groups opposing the port tunnel project of "manipulating the democratic process" by postponing a decision by the City Council until after the forthcoming election, reports Frank McDonald.

Mr Fintan Cassidy, spokesman for the Combined Residents Associations (CRA), said the reported move to defer the decision until July was "indicative of their desperation to railroad through at any cost their own preferred option".

He said the corporation apparently feared that, in the run up to the general election, councillors were "likely to comply with the wishes of a large block of voters in the Dublin North Central and Dublin North West constituencies".

Mr Cassidy said the CRA was urging these councillors to support a Green Party motion, tabled for the next City Council meeting on May 12th, calling for consideration to be given to an east-west option for the £130 million project.
