GARDAÍ IN Cork have launched an investigation after a man was killed when he was hit by a lorry while out jogging on the outskirts of the city at lunchtime yesterday.
The man has been named as John O’Riordan (43), a father of one, from Stickstown, Coomakee, Farnane. He worked as prison officer at Cork Prison.
He was one of two pedestrians killed on the roads in less than 24 hours.
The incident happened on the Ballyhooley Road near Ballyvolane on Cork’s north side.
Mr O’Riordan was struck by an articulated lorry just after 1pm and fatally injured.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The road was closed off for several hours pending an examination by Garda forensic crash investigators.
Gardaí at Mayfield have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may be able to assist them to contact them on 021-455 8510.
Meanwhile, in Mayo on Wednesday night, an elderly man died when he was hit by a truck while walking after his car had broken down.
Pat O’Haire (90), a single man, who lived at Newport Road, Castlebar, Co Mayo, was killed at about 9.30pm on the N5 at Islandeady, between Castlebar and Westport.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial reports indicate that Mr O’Haire’s car had overheated and he was walking to a nearby house for assistance when he was struck by a passing vehicle.
There were significant traffic delays and a diversion through Newport in operation on the N5 Castlebar to Westport road yesterday as gardaí carried out a forensic examination of the scene.
