A man who burgled an antique shop a day after he was given a suspended sentence for robbery has been jailed for 4 1/2 years. Judge Pat McCartan said Daniel O'Connell had shown "utterly blatant contempt" for the leniency shown to him on his last appearance at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The judge heard O'Connell (42), of Oliver Bond Flats, had threatened two men with a knife while robbing a shop the day after he was given an 18-month suspended sentence.
O'Connell later burgled an antique shop while on bail. He had 44 previous convictions. Judge McCartan said everything pleaded on O'Connell's behalf at his last court appearance had been a lie and the court had been misled. He also noted that O'Connell had failed to tell the court he was due to be arraigned on a robbery charge on a future date.
O'Connell pleaded guilty to robbery at Thomas Street, Dublin, on December 9th, 1999, and to burglary at Francis Street, Dublin, on June 14th, 1999.
