Bottled water

After recent health scares linked to the public water supply, I'll still take the 59 cent 2-litre bottle of water in Dunnes over the stuff our Government provides. Having to buy water, having to pay for grinds for the kids, having to pay road tolls, etc. Does anyone know what my PAYE goes to pay for, because I'm paying for everything it used to pay for? - Colm

Cross-Border shopping

With the completion of the new M1 upgrade linking Dundalk and Newry, some of your readers might be interested in the occasional trip to the Sainsbury's Hyperstore at Sprucefield, outside Lisburn. The ludicrous prices charged for alcohol in the Republic obviously don't apply here and the choice of spirits and beers is much more impressive than the generic swill offered in the South. Now that there is an increasingly vocal lobby seeking to have even more tax slapped on drink - in a misguided attempt to solve our "binge-drinking" crisis - sourcing affordable gargle is going to be even more difficult. I travel abroad two or three times a year and am always careful to bring some spirits back with me. I absolutely refuse to pay €27.95 for a 70cl bottle of Scotch in my local off licence when a litre of the same costs €18 in Nantes airport duty free. - Philip Donnelly
