Communist guerrillas attacked an army patrol base in the eastern Philippine island of Samar today, killing eight soldiers and two government militiamen, the military said.
The military said "a large number" of New People's Army guerrillas attacked the army outpost before dawn in the village of Babaclayun in San José de Buan town, triggering fierce clashes.
Two soldiers survived the attack but said that despite defending the outpost they were outnumbered.
