A former sailor, described as part of a paedophile ring in Cobh, Co Cork, has been jailed for six months for indecent assault.

Patrick Collins (58), of Belmont, Cobh, was sentenced at Cork Circuit Criminal Court to 12 months imprisonment with the last six months suspended after he pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting a seven year old boy on two different occasions between 1992 and 1994.

The sentence will run consecutively with a ten year jail sentence he received in 2001 for 18 sexual assaults and 22 buggery offences against four young boys.

The victims in the case were aged between six and 15 when the assaults occurred in the 1980s.

Sgt John Quinn told the court he was part of a paedophile ring that was broken up by gardaí.

He said Collins had never shown any remorse for his actions prior to his appearance in court.
