Ten towns and parishes in the heart of the Merriman district have joined with Clare Co Council in providing the East Clare Way, Ireland's newest long-distance walking route, which was officially opened yesterday.

The 112-mile route, with 250 miles of looped walks, begins and ends at Killaloe and has 900 markers and place names. It passes over the rugged terrain of the Slieve Aughty and Slieve Bernagh mountains - against a backdrop of Lough Derg and the Shannon.

The broadcaster and writer, Mr Dick Warner, unveiled the signpost at the start and launched an illustrated guide and walker's map.
