A campaign to save a pair of threatened listed buildings in Ennistymon, Co Clare, has complained there is no funding available to implement long-standing plans for a bypass.

Clare County Council is planning to demolish the two protected structures to make way for a roundabout to regulate traffic to and from Lahinch, saying this would relieve a bottleneck.

“We find the council’s proposals strange as Kerry County Council and the National Roads Authority have spent €100 million on Kerry roads in the last year,” said Denis Vaughan of Save Ennistymon’s Heritage.

Killaloe, in southeast Clare, had also got €40 million for a new bridge and bypass, Mr Vaughan added.

“It’s amazing that the NRA and Clare County Council cannot find a humble €10 million for our Ennistymon bypass, which has been in the Clare county plan for 60 years.”
