Berlin - The Catholic Church in Germany said yesterday it would start within days to compensate survivors who were forced to work for the church under the Nazi slave labour programme during the second World War.

The 1,000 survivors of the church's 10,000 forced wartime labourers will receive 5,000 German marks (£1,300) each. Most of the church's forced labourers came from neighbouring Poland.
