Athletics: Mark Christie, who claimed the National Intercounties cross country title in Dungarvan yesterday, has yet to decide whether he will run in the senior or under-23 division at next month's European Championships.

The 21-year-old was included in the Irish team announced this afternoon but has yet to confirm if he intends to run in the new, experimental under-23 category introduced this year on a demonstration basis.

Fionnaula Britton, who dominated the women's event yesterday winning by 45 seconds, is likely to run in the under-23 division and will travel with genuine medal hopes.

And while the Irish team will travel to Italy without Alistair Craig and Gareth Turnbull, who have both turned down places in the side, new manager Ann Keenan Buckley is confident of success.

"I have been very close to the action this year and feel that this team is very strong and all the whole squad have been performing well all year and not just in the last two or three months," Keenan said.

"We have such a wealth of talent coming through that we have to be confident.  With the likes of Mary Cullen, Fionnuala Britton and Gary Murray, we have young runners on top form and are well able to mix it with Europe's best."
