An inquiry has begun into the death of a 50-year-old Chinese man from injuries sustained in an assault over the weekend.

A Garda spokeswoman said they have not yet launched a murder inquiry and the incident is being treated as a "fatal assault".

The victim was named this morning as Mr Leong Ly Min, a takeaway owner from Tallaght. It is understood he had been living in Ireland for a number of years.

He received serious head injuries when he and a friend were attacked as they walked along Fownes Street in Temple Bar at about 2 a.m. on Friday. It is believed he was kicked in the head. He was brought to St James's Hospital but never regained consciousness.

The second man, in his 30s, was less seriously injured and has since been released from hospital.

Two men aged, aged 32 and 24, were questioned by gardaí over the attack. They have been remanded in custody to appear in Cloverhill District Court on Friday on assault charges.

The spokeswoman said a file was being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions, and it was not yet decided whether more serious charges would be brought.

According to gardaí, there was no evidence of any dispute before the assaults, which appeared to be unprovoked.
