Edinburgh - A freakshow performer used a chainsaw to carve an apple held in a man's mouth yesterday to protest against new rules that artistes say are killing the spirit of the world's largest, and quirkiest, arts fair.

The stunt by American Jim Rose, at the annual Edinburgh Fringe Festival, was in protest against new city regulations that restrict the number of performers on the streets and force them to take out insurance.
