Centre of Belfast gets designation

The commercial centre of Belfast yesterday became an official conservation area

The commercial centre of Belfast yesterday became an official conservation area. The designation, confirmed by the Department of the Environment, covers the commercial heart of the city and takes in an area from May Street to the back of City Hall to North Street.

The area has a number of buildings with Victorian and Edwardian architecture. More than 120 are listed for their architectural merit. A DoE spokesman said the designation will contribute to the city's regeneration.
