Gardaí have arrested five men following the discovery of a "large-scale" cannabis-growing factory in Co Meath.

Gardaí have arrested five men following the discovery of a "large-scale" cannabis-growing factory in Co Meath.

Up to 1,720 cannabis plants said to be worth in the region of €680,000 were uncovered during the search of a large shed on a rural farm in Bective.

Officers from the Garda National Drugs Unit and local units in Meath were involved in the operation, which was carried out at around 2pm.

Three of the men arrested are being questioned in Kells, while the other two are being detained at Navan Garda station.

A Garda spokesman said the suspects were Irish nationals and are aged 32, 37, 40, 43 and 60.
