Counties adjoining Dublin are losing out to the rest of Ireland in local government funding, despite their rapidly growing populations, a Democratic Left councillor has claimed.

Ms Catherine Murphy contrasted spending of £247 per head in Kildare with the "massive" £541 per head in Leitrim.

She pointed out that Kildare, Meath and Wicklow faced continuing population growth and growing pressure on infrastructure and called for an increase in "baseline funding" for the three counties.
