A Bangladeshi Buddhist monk told the High Court yesterday he will face severe persecution if he is deported to his own country.

Counsel for Suman Barua, currently living in the Kinsale Accommodation Centre in Cork, told Ms Justice Mary Irvine that Ireland is unique in Europe in not providing public hearings for failed refugees claiming subsidiary protection.

The judge granted Mr Barua leave to serve short notice on the Minister for Justice seeking to quash his decision to refuse him subsidiary protection after having refused him asylum. Mr Barua’s solicitor Thomas Coughlan said the case was one of a number which could go to the European Court.
