A British soldier has been killed and three injured in a "friendly fire" incident in southern Iraq, British defence sources late last night.

The soldier was killed after an American A10 tankbuster plane targeted two armoured vehicles, according to reports.

The soldier is the fifth British person to die in a "blue on blue" attack since the war against Iraq started.

A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said: "We can confirm we are investigatingan incident involving possible friendly fire as a matter of urgency."
