A British soldier killed in action in southern Afghanistan at the weekend has been named as Corporal Bryan Budd by the Ministry of Defence.

His death brought to 20 the number of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan since 2001.

Budd (29), from the 3rd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, died from injuries sustained in a firefight with Taliban guerrillas in Sangin, Helmand province, on Sunday.

Three other British soldiers were injured in the incident during a routine patrol close to the district centre.
