Construction activity in Britain expanded at its slowest pace in five months in January, a key monthly survey says.

The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply said today its purchasing managers' index for the sector dropped to 56.3 last month from 59.2 in December.

A reading above 50 denotes expansion, while any reading below that level signals contraction.
