Former German international defender Hans-Peter Briegel has reached a verbal agreement to coach the Albanian national football team.

Briegel, who will retain his post on the administrative board of German Bundesliga side Kaiserslautern, said that he would sign a contract with Albania in the coming days.

The 47-year-old will guide the team through their six remaining qualifying matches for Euro 2004 in Portugal.

Albania play host to the Republic of Ireland in Group 10 next April.

Capped 72 times for the German team Briegel was a 1980 European champion and a member of the World Cup runners-up squad in 1982 and 1986.

He formerly coached Turkish sides Besiktas Istanbul and Trabzonspor.
