A 15-year-old teenager was charged last night in connection with the death of 14-year-old Daragh Conroy in Mountmellick, Co Laois, at a special sitting of Carlow District Court last night.

The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with assault causing harm under Section Four of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

He has been remanded to Oberstown Detention Centre for boys at Lusk, Co Dublin.

Judge Gerard Furlong asked that the youth receive "all appropriate psychiatric and medical attention" in custody.

The teenager will appear again at Portlaoise District Court tomorrow.
