A SUSPECT car bomb was defused by British army bomb disposal officers outside the Sinn Fein office on the Falls Road in west Belfast yesterday, writes Suzanne Breen. The vehicle was destroyed by two controlled explosions. No one has admitted responsibility for the attack, but loyalists are believed to have been involved.

The alert began at 7 a.m. when a caller to a local radio station claimed that a 100lb bomb had been left outside the premises. He gave no recognised codeword and did not claim to represent any organisation.

The caller also warned that a car bomb had been left at Dublin Airport, but gardai declared the area clear after searching the airport car parks.
