Cape Town - Lawyers for the South African anti-apartheid cleric, the Rev Allan Boesak, yesterday asked for fraud charges against him to be thrown out after the court declined to hear evidence from the singer Paul Simon.

Judge John Foxcroft, trying Mr Boesak on 32 charges of fraud and theft of donations intended for victims of apartheid, rejected an application by the prosecution for the court to hear the testimony of the singer in New York.
