The body of a fisherman (42) who went missing in the River Barrow in Carlow earlier in the week has been recovered by the Garda Water Unit this afternoon.

Mr Thomas Butler was found two miles from Carlow town. He had got into difficulty while swimming at Lanigans Lock, near Graiguecullen Bridge, on Monday.

Gardaí and local firecrews conducted a search immediately after the alarm was raised at 5 p.m. on Monday and have been searching ever since.

A post-mortem is due to be carried out later today.
