Bin campaign calls on union members to march

Anti-bin charges campaigners have called on members of Dublin trade unions to turn out in large numbers for a protest march this Saturday.

Cllr Ruth Coppinger of the Fingal campaign made the call following last night's endorsement of the protest last night by the Dublin Council of Trade Unions.

"This is the first trade union protest against the bin tax and workers and trade unionists should turn out in large numbers to oppose double taxation and to demand the release of Joe and Clare," she said.

Mr Joe Higgins TD and Cllr Clare Daly were jailed for a month on September 19th last for defying a High Court injunction prohibiting them from attending anti-charges blockades.

The Saturday march - End the Bin Tax - Free the Bin Tax Protesters - begins in Parnell Square and will proceed to Mountjoy Prison.

It will be addressed by Mr Jack O'Connor of SIPTU, Mr Mick O'Reilly of the ATGWU, Mr Eamonn Devoy of the TEEU and Cllr Coppinger.

The case against 12 of 25 anti-charges protesters will be heard tomorrow after 13 of them today undertook at the High Court not to break the terms of an injunction preventing them from interfering with the collection of bins.
