The 70-year-old Co Limerick man who was seriously injured when a bell fell into a church porch was described as "critical" in the Mid-West Regional Hospital in Limerick yesterday.

Mr William Shire, married, of Bushfield, Patricks well, was ringing the bell for service at Croom Church of Ireland parish church on Sunday morning when the bell fell 24 feet through a ceiling into the porch.

He was taken to hospital with serious head and shoulder injuries.
