A mother told a court she believed her son, who had been systematically beaten by her husband throughout this childhood, was angry and went on a series of crimes in his teens as a result. Timmy Nelligan (18), of Ravensdale Close, Cork, carried out a spate of arsons in the Mahon area of the city, causing £150,000 worth of damage.

Judge Patrick Moran was told that Nelligan, who was currently serving a six-year sentence, was an exemplary prisoner in Arbour Hill. He was given a five-year sentence in the Cork Circuit Criminal Court yesterday to run concurrently with the sentence which he is at present serving.
