Dave Bassett took over as Leicester manager this afternoon and vowed to fight to keep the club in the Premiership.

Dave Bassett took over as Leicester manager this afternoon and vowed to fight to keep the club in the Premiership.

Bassett ended a 10-month exile from management since leaving Barnsley last December when he succeeded the sacked Peter Taylor at Filbert Street.

Micky Adams becomes Bassett's number two after leaving his job at the helm of second division promotion chasers Brighton.

Bassett faces an enormous task to revive the Foxes, who are currently bottom of the Premiership and last night were beaten 6-0 at home by Leeds in the Worthington Cup.

Bassett told Sky Sports News: "Obviously I'm delighted. It's going to be a difficult task - but that's why I'm being given the opportunity.

"If Leicester were up at the top of the table myself and Micky wouldn't be given the chance.

"Our objective and target is to keep Leicester in the Premiership."

Leicester chairman John Elsom, confirming Bassett's appointment until June 2003, said: "Dave needs no introduction.

"He is vastly experience in top flight football and we believe he has the attributes the club needs at this time."

Adams' contract will run until 2004, while Bassett's deal expires in 2003, and Elsom confirmed he hopes the former Brighton manager will eventually replace 57-year-old Bassett as number one.
