THE German government has reconfirmed its opposition to bail for Ms Roisin McAliskey, who is wanted in connection with an IRA attack on a British army base in Germany last June.

Ms McAliskey's solicitor claimed yesterday that German embassy officials had said she was to be released on humanitarian grounds. Ms McAliskey is six months pregnant.

Ms Arvinber Sambei, representing the German government, told Bow Street Magistrates' Court she was "completely surprised" by the suggestion. Her instructions were to oppose any request for bail.

However, Ms Gareth Peirce, representing Ms McAliskey, said German embassy officials were claiming it was the British authorities who were now refusing bail.

The Magistrate, Mr Peter Badge, said that this "contradiction" should be resolved. He remanded Ms McAliskey in custody until March 12th, when extradition proceedings will begin.
