British Airways said today it would raise fuel surcharges on long-haul tickets sold in the United Kingdom to compensate for rising oil prices.

BA said it would increase the levy on long-haul tickets to £30 ($55.13) per flight, up from £24 per flight previously. Fuel surcharges on short-haul flights were unchanged. The airline said it was not changing its revenue guidance for the year.

In Brussels, new European Union rules requiring airlines to give compensation to passengers for late or cancelled flights are valid, an adviser to the EU's highest court has said.

The new rules, which came into force in February, stipulate carriers must compensate passengers for overbooking, long delays or cancelled flights with food and hotel rooms and, in some cases, hundreds of euros.
