At least 10 people were feared dead and dozens injured when four carriages of a train travelling from Moscow to Russia's second city of St Petersburg derailed today.
A spokesman said the accident happened at 9.30pm (1830 GMT) near the town of Bologoye some 350km (200 miles) from Moscow.
"There are injured," the spokesman said without giving further details. "Medics, rescue teams and police are working at the scene."
An emergency service official from the regional centre Tver, contacted by telephone by Reuters said on condition of anonymity: "There were casualties". He did not elaborate.
RIA news agency quoted an emergencies ministry source as saying 10 people were killed and about 130 were injured.
A law-enforcement source told Interfax news agency that several people were feared dead and more than 25 were injured.
"The bodies could be buried under the wreckage," he told Interfax.
Neither report could be officially confirmed
No official statements were available as to what may have caused the accident. Russian news agencies quoted transport officials as saying the electricity supply may have been at fault.
