At least 10 people were killed and 15 wounded, some critically, in a shootout in Indian Kashmir. The incident took place near Qasim Nagar area in Jammu city.
"Our police team has gone to the spot and it's not confirmed as yet whether it's a militant or a criminal act," a police official in Jammu said.
"It's a cluster of jhuggies [slum dwellings] and those dwellers do have a criminal record. The area has been cordoned off," the official said.
Muslim-majority Kashmir is at the heart of more than half a century of troubled ties between India and Pakistan who have massed close to a million troops along their border.
Meanwhile, nine Europeans and three Pakistanis were wounded today when a hand grenade was hurled at a tourist party in northern Pakistan.
The nine included seven Germans, one Austrian and one Slovenian. The injuries were described as minor and all of the wounded have been discharged from hospital.
Some 27 tourists were visiting Ashoka sites - relics of ancient Hindu civilisation - near Mansehra in the northwestern Frontier Province when they were attacked, Brigadier Javed Iqbal Cheema said.
"They were just walking around the Ashoka rocks when someone lobbed a home-made device," he told Reuters. "About 12 people were injured but they have very superficial injuries and all have been discharged from hospital," he added.
