Podgorica - On Sunday, the incumbent President of Montnegro, Mr Momir Bulatovic, will face his former associate, Mr Milo Djukanovic, in a pivotal presidential election. For Mr Djukanovic, "Montenegrins will choose Sunday between democracy and totalitarism".

President Bulatovic is a long-time and close ally of Yugoslavia's head of state, Mr Slobodan Milosevic, the hard line nationalist who used to be Serbia's president.

But Mr Djukanovic, Montenegro's Prime Minister and an advocate of liberal economics, says the time has come for Montenegro's 600,000 people to escape from Serbia's shadow. Despite their differences, both remain members of the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists.
