A 17-year-old youth was charged at a special sitting of Limerick District Court yesterday with assaulting a man in the city's St Mary's Park area.

Mr William Moran jnr, Clare Street, Dublin Road, was alleged to have assaulted Mr Jonathan Edwards (19), of Corbally, causing him serious bodily harm at St Ita's Street, St Mary's Park, on August 28th.

Insp John Scanlan told Judge Leo Malone that the victim was gravely ill, and there was a likelihood of more serious charges. He said the defendant had presented himself at Mayorstone Garda station on Wednesday.

Det Sgt Jim Ryan said he believed the youth might flee the jurisdiction if granted bail.

Mr Ted McCarthy, defending, submitted that if his client had wanted to flee he could have done so before he presented himself to gardai.

The defendant was remanded in custody until September 6th.
