A new alliance of writers, artists and culture groups in Galway has called on the city's planners to halt CIÉ's controversial €1 billion plan for Ceannt Station.

It has also called on national and local politicians to host a forum on the city's infrastructural needs - transport, cultural, social, economic - up to 2050.

Over 50 arts organisations and individuals represented by Arts Alliance Galway have described the plan to redevelop Ceannt Station in the city-centre as "culturally bankrupt".

The group has criticised the allocation of only 490 square metres of the 5.97-hectare site to a "cultural facility".

This proportion accounts for just 0.2 per cent of the site, compared to 25 per cent for car parking, the alliance states in a report due to be published today. While CIÉ describes the plan as a new "transport hub", transport elements account for just 9 per cent of the total, the group says.
