Bonn - The German Defence Minister, Mr Volker Ruehe, yesterday proposed an independent inquiry into damaging incidents linking the German army with right-wing extremism.

A ministry spokesman, Mr Hans-Dieter Wichter, told journalists Mr Ruehe had made the suggestion in a report to the parliamentary defence committee which he delivered in person. The report was prompted by one of the latest in a series of incidents to emerge - the invitation of a convicted neo-Nazi bomber, Manfred Roeder, to give a talk at an elite military academy in 1995.
