A milk churn containing around 56 pounds of homemade explosives has been recovered by the Army Bomb Disposal Unit in Clones, Co Monaghan this evening.

A garda spokesman said a call was received yesterday claiming a device had been left on the Clones to Cavan road, about 500 metres south of the Border. The area was sealed off and the milk churn discovered.

Today, the army dismantled the churn and found the explosives and a booster charge. It is thought the device may have been in transit when it was left on the roadside.

The area is still sealed off and further searches will be carried out tomorrow.
