There was widespread traffic disruption on the roads surrounding the Westlink - which was closed in both directions.

It is understood that police were acting on reports the white van may have been stopped in the west of the city earlier and a package placed on board.

The driver had reportedly been ordered to drive to the Grosvenor Road police Station in Belfast.

The controlled explosion blew the rear doors off the van.
