The Army bomb disposal team was called in yesterday to deal with an explosive device which was found in a series of drug raids in inner-city Dublin, writes Ronan McGreevy.

The crude device was found by the south-central crime task force as part of Operation Anvil which has been targeting the city's drugs gangs. It followed a search of apartments in Dolphin's Barn.

The explosive ordnance disposal team was called in after officers from the Garda Technical Bureau examined the device.

An Army spokesman said it contained a "pound or two" of explosives, but did not have a detonator or a power unit. It was dealt with by the explosives ordinance disposal team at Kilbride camp in Co Wicklow.

The spokesman added that the device was not of any immediate danger to anyone.
