More than 200 cars are stolen in the Republic each week, according to Labour's consumer affairs spokesman, Mr Pat Upton, who called for "modern anti-theft devices" to be fitted as standard to all new cars. Mr Upton urged the Minister for the Environment, Mr Dempsey, to introduce regulations to ensure that new cars would have devices, such as immobilisers.
