THE Pro Life Campaign is to write to all TDs as part of an intensive pre election lobbying of politicians in an effort to have another abortion referendum.

The PLC's chairman, Mr Des Hanafin, said the group planned to "pull out all the stops in 1997 for an abortion referendum".

The campaign involves printing and distributing 500,000 leaflets, a membership and fund raising drive, lobbying of politicians and advertising in the local and national media. Advisers to the Pro Life Campaign are to meet before the new year to co ordinate a strategy.

The general election is expected to be used as a particularly powerful mechanism to win political support for another poll to change Article 40.3.3.

According to Mr Denis Murphy, a spokesman for the PLC, voters must be given another opportunity to ensure that "abortion really is outlawed on Irish soil". There was considerable ambiguity surrounding the abortion issue since the X case.
